Top 8 Tips to Keep Your Dog’s Coat Glossy and Shiny

Much like we take care of ourselves and feel better about it, our dogs will also feel so much better if their coat is taken care of well. While they can only do so much before it starts to itch and bother them, there are different ways in which you can keep your dog’s coat from dulling or falling out or matting. More often than not, the reason for dullness is due to the lack of nutrition. Your dog isn’t getting enough of the good stuff and that is affecting him physically. That is never a good sign and you definitely need to make sure that you get enough nutrition into their diet. Here are some really easy natural pet care remedies to retain that glossy coat for your furry friend.

  1. The right food makes all the difference. Whatever you’re feeding your dogs, make sure that it’s of the best quality. Your dog needs the right nutrition and the proper diet, because that’s what keeps them healthy and instantly changes the state of their coat as well.
  2. Brushing regularly is important. You don’t have to brush your dog’s coat ten times a day, but make sure that you brush as often as possible. What brushing does is that it stimulates the skin and hair follicles which produces the skin oils that helps boost the glossiness of the coat. So you can brush every day or every alternative day, but enough that it also stops the hair from matting.
  3. Make sure you bathe your dog thoroughly once a month. But if your dog is more active and is constantly getting into dirt, then you would need to bathe him more often. Obviously bathing them too often can strip the natural oils that protects the coat, but when you do bathe them, make sure you use good quality shampoo and conditioner, that is ideal for your dog.
  4. Using oil is definitely a great way to make the coat shinier and once your dog is bathed, massage some coconut oil into their fur to lock in the moisture. You can also add a teaspoon of coconut oil a day to their food that will make their coat glossier and brighter, plus coconut oil will also help with healthy digestion!
  5. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are also extremely helpful and a good addition to their diet. Omega-3 fatty acids help with skin disorders, so add a little flaxseed or fish oil to their diet just to boost the work on the skin. It won’t happen instantly and could take a while, but also be cautious of how much you are feeding your dog as it can make them sick.
  6. It might sound weird and strange, but try giving your dog an oatmeal bath. If your dog scratches a lot, the oatmeal works like a scrub as well as helps cool your dog down. All you need is to add finely ground oatmeal to a tub of warm water. The oatmeal also helps soothe the skin and revives the skin, like any scrub would do.
  7. Herbal supplements are another great addition to keeping the glossiness of the coat as it is. Supplements like horsetail, which is high in silica, helps to maintain healthy coat, skin and bones. Before you add any supplements to their diet, speak with your veterinarian to make sure that the dosage is alright.
  8. And finally, take your furry friend to the vet if you’re still not sure what the problem is or can’t seem to find a way to get the shiny coat back. It could be any number of reasons and getting someone to look at him would definitely help with understanding what is the best method to follow.
